Amazon S3 More Feature - Cloud Essentials
Amazon S3 Storage Classes
Amazon S3 offers a wide range of Storage Classes according to data nature and access frequency, throughput, access time, cost etc
In Amazon S3 any type of file or any metadata that describe that file is called objects,Objects are stored in S3 container called buckets
These S3 Storage classes are :
- S3 Standard
- S3 Intelligent Tiering
- S3 Standard -IA
- S3 One Zone -IA
- S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval
- S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval
- S3 Glacier Deep Archive
Service Name | Access Speed and Data Nature | Cost/time to access |
---|---|---|
S3 Standard | Frequently Accessed Data | Mili secs |
S3 Intelligent Tiering | Unknown or changing access data | |
S3 Standard - IA | Infrequently Accessed Data | |
S3 One Zone - IA | Infrequently Accessed Data Recreated Data(due to Availability feature) |
|
S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval | Long-time data archive digital preservation | |
S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval | Minutes Access Free bulk retrievals: 5-12 hours |
|
S3 Glacier Deep Archive | 12-48 hours retrieval |
Amazon S3 More features |
Amazon S3 Standard :
Amazon S3 standard is a normal s3 bucket which is used to retrieve and store the data this bucket contains frequently accessed data like home page code etc
Amazon S3 standard offers high-speed retrieval, The data stored in high-speed SSD's
Amazon S3 Intelligent tearing(Automatic):
Amazon S3's Special case where there is a tier level in which data is present it is decided by data recent access pattern which data would be at which level
The Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class automatically stores objects in three access tiers. One tier is optimized for frequent access, one lower-cost tier is optimized for infrequent access, and another very low-cost tier is optimized for rarely accessed data.
- Frequent Tier: The data accessed frequently and S3 Intelligent tearing level low behave as S3 standard
- Infrequent Tier: When data is not accessible for around 15 days it moves to Mid-level where access time is high and low cost
- Rarely Accessed Tier: When data has not access been accessed for more than 30 days
When the Data is not being accessed for more than 90 days then it moves to the Archive S3 storage classes to AWS S3 Glacier frequent access and continues till AWS Deep Archive
Note
If the size of an object is less than 128 KB, it is not monitored and is not eligible for automatic tiering. Smaller objects are always stored in the Frequent Access tier.
Amazon S3 Standard -IA :
Amazon S3 Standard Infrequent Access is a bucket where the data comes which is not frequently accessed but requires rapid access whenever needed
It also offers a low per GB retrieval charge storage cost of around half of Amazon S3 Standard with the same high durability, high throughput and low latency features of S3 Standard
This combination of low cost and high performance makes S3 Standard-IA ideal for long-term storage, backups, and as a data store for disaster recovery files.
Amazon S3 One Zone -IA :
Amazon S3 One Zone offers Rapid access or Mili seconds access to the Infrequent access data but with 20% less cost than Amazon S3 / S3 -IA but with compromising in Availability and resilience
This makes the S3 one zone -IA service ideal for backup or disaster storage and backup copies of on-premises data or re-creatable data You can also use it as cost-effective storage for data that is replicated from another AWS Region using S3 Cross-Region Replication
Amazon S3 offers High Throughput, high durability and low latency, the same as S3 Standard and S3 Standard -IA using the same engineering design as S3 regional classes S3 One Zone -IA also offers 11 nine (99.999999999%) of Durability but may be susceptible to data loss in the unlikely case of the loss or damage to all or part of an AWS Availability Zone you can configure S3 Standard, S3 intelligent -tiering classes to the object level and a single bucket can contain objects stored across S3 Standard, S3 intelligent-Tiering, S3 Standard -IA, and S3 One Zone-IA you can also use S3 lifecycle policies to automatically transition objects storage classes without any application changes
Key features:
- Re-creatable infrequently accessed data
- Same low latency and high throughput performance of S3 Standard
- Designed to deliver 99.5% availability with an availability SLA of 99%
Amazon S3 Glacier Storage class :
it is like a warehouse for historical data cause Glacier stores the data which is frequently used rarely or for data analytical processes
The Amazon S3 Glacier class was introduced for The purpose of data
This is the lowest cost S3 class in AWS as it is designed to provide the Highest performance data this is also the most flexible data sharing and caring platform for managing
The Amazon S3 glacier storage class are classified into 3 types
1. Amazon S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval:
For archive data that needs immediate access, such as medical images, news media assets, or genomics data, choose the S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval storage class, an archive storage class that delivers
> Can save 68% of the amount than S3 Standard Infrequent Access
> When your data is accessed in a Quarter then It offers the fastest speed
> S3 Glacier Instant retrieval offers the fastest retrieval to Archive storage
> Archived data which need immediate access: Medical images, news media assets, or generated content archives
> You can upload objects directly to S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval,
> You can also use Th S3 Lifecycle policies to transfer data from the S3 storage classes
Key features:
- Long-lived data that is accessed a few times per year with instant retrievals
- Data retrieval in milliseconds with the same performance as S3 Standard
- Designed to deliver 99.9% availability with an availability SLA of 99%
- 128 KB minimum object size
- S3 PUT API for direct uploads to S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, and S3 Lifecycle management for automatic migration of objects
2. Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval :
For archive data that does not require immediate access but needs the flexibility to retrieve large sets of data at no cost, such as backup or disaster recovery use cases, choose S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval (formerly S3 Glacier) with retrieval in minutes or free bulk retrievals in 5—12 hours. To save even more on long-lived archive storage such as compliance archives and digital media preservation,
3. Amazon S3 Deep Archive :
Choose S3 Glacier Deep Archive, which has the lowest cost of storage in the cloud with data retrieval from 12—48 hours.
